The Fashion Of The Queer EGO(T)
My thesis was an exploration of menswear as a method of self-expression and identity from the early 1900's through modern day. I also explored ways to adapt tailoring proportional systems to trans and gender non-conforming bodies and individuals. I focused specifically on queer fashion icons who pushed the boundaries of gender norms for their time. This allowed me to look at both the idea of who influences fashion and how that has changed throughout time, but queer people's role at the forefront of fashion movements.
Using the four 'EGOT' awards as a criteria for choosing my looks I ended up with the following icons.
Marlene Dietrich: A Lesbian movie star from the 1930's became the first woman to wear a tuxedo on the silver screen
David Bowie: As his character Ziggy Stardust, the agender alien from outer space, he popularized androgynous clothing
Billy Porter: Winning his Tony for his role as Lola in Kinky Boots, Billy Porter has always been an icon for the blending of gendered styles
